Sam Smith, Carolina Golf Journal, Publisher

Broadcaster / journalist Sam Smith has spent his entire career promoting athletics at every level of the sporting world. Now Smith steps out from behind the microphone as Publisher of the Carolina Golf Journal.

“With my passion for the game of golf, this will be a labor of love," Sam says. "I am determined to fully dedicate my efforts to helping re-kindle the economy in the golf community for players and hard-working businesses that share my desire for this game.”

Before undertaking his new role in launching the Carolina Golf Journal, Smith spent 25 years in the NBA as studio, play-by-play radio and television announcer with the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and Charlotte Bobcats.

During Smith’s tenure with the Spurs and the Heat, USA Today honored Smith seven times as one of the NBA’s Top-Five play-by-play announcers.

In 1980, Smith was hired as one of ESPN’s first ever play-by-play announcers – announcing NBA, Top Rank Boxing, kickboxing, college football and basketball, to name a few of the sports. Smith also had extensive college broadcast experience including stops at Notre Dame, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Texas-El Paso.

Over the years Smith enjoyed seven NCAA playoff appearances and two trips to the Final Four. Smith also helped develop the largest Historically Black College and University Television Network, serving as associate producer and play-by-play announcer for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Basketball Tournament.
