Howard Ward worked for the Fayetteville Observer for 41 years, the last 27 as Sports Editor. Since 1998, Howard has worked as the golf writer for The Pilot Newspaper in South Pines, and as a freelance writer for various publications including GolfWeek, GolfWorld, Golf Magazine and Golf Travel. Howard was the editor of the Golf Record of the Carolinas for eight years until its demise in 2007.
In his career, Howard has covered 21 Masters Tournaments, seven U.S. Men's Opens, three PGA Championship, three U.S. Women's Opens, two U.S. Amateur Championships and one LPGA Championship. He wrote what may have been the first national article on Michelle Wie for GolfWeek when she competed in the 2000 WAPL Championship at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, North Carolina, as a 10-year old.
A prolific writer, Howard writes more than 360 golf articles annually. He has been a member of the CGRA since 1970, serving as vice-president in 1970 and President in 1980. He helped organize the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame and served on the Hall of Fame selection committee through 2008.
